Best Microphones for Radio and Podcasting

Table of Contents

We have previously compiled a list of the best equipment for radio and podcasting, and now we’d like to introduce ten more microphones for you to consider. This list includes microphones that differ from the previous five, and they are arranged by price from low to high.

Let’s get started!

Behringer B1

Best for starters microphone

This microphone is a condenser type with a unidirectional (cardioid) polar pattern and an XLR connector. It is versatile and can be effectively used as the main support microphone in both studio and live settings. It excels at capturing acoustic instruments and works well as an overhead microphone.

One of its notable advantages is its affordability without compromising on quality. It delivers an open and transparent sound with a flat response, offering a slight boost in the presence range. It also includes filters to handle high volume and low frequencies, ensuring durability.

However, it’s important to note that this microphone is primarily designed for stage and recording purposes. In smaller studio environments, it may exhibit heightened sensitivity when used for voice recording, requiring careful adjustment of volume levels and microphone placement to minimize ambient noise.

In terms of pricing, it is reasonably priced at $89, making it a compelling choice within its price range. Overall, it is considered one of the top options, but it’s essential to be aware of its intended use for stage and studio applications, which may offer more features than needed for a compact home studio setup.

Rode Broadcaster

Best mid-range microphone

Condenser microphone with unidirectional (cardioid) polar pattern and XLR connector, ideal for broadcast vocal applications and voiceovers. Offers ultra-low noise, a low-cut filter to reduce low-frequency rumbling, an internal pop filter for plosive reduction, and comes with a ten-year extended warranty. Priced at $419, it excels in internet radio broadcasting but is relatively expensive.

Audio-Technica AT2020

Best budget microphone

Condenser microphone with a unidirectional (cardioid) polar pattern and XLR connector, primarily suited for studio applications. Notable pros include its low noise level, high SPL handling, wide dynamic range, extended frequency response, and superior transient response. However, it lacks tone control, delivers a flat sound, requires close proximity to the source for effective sound pickup, and lacks English setup instructions. Priced at $99, it’s an affordable option but may not meet high-quality standards.

Shure SM7B

Best functionality microphone

Dynamic microphone with a unidirectional (cardioid) polar pattern and XLR connector, well-suited for streaming and singing. Its advantages include versatility for studio, home recording, podcasting, and streaming, and it doesn’t require DC electric power (phantom power). However, it comes at a relatively high price of $399 and necessitates additional equipment for use. It’s less sensitive than condenser microphones and excels in capturing loud singing but may not capture nuanced vocals effectively. Overall, the SM7B offers versatility but may be costly due to the additional equipment needed for optimal use.

Electro-Voice RE20

Best premium microphone

The Electro-Voice RE20, a dynamic microphone with an XLR connection, boasts outstanding sound quality but comes at a relatively high price point, averaging around $450 (prices may vary on Amazon). This microphone enjoys a dedicated fan base among Electro-Voice enthusiasts and is highly regarded in the podcasting and audio realms, praised for its rich tones, depth, and resonance, which impart a distinct and memorable quality to recordings. While it offers exceptional audio quality, it’s worth noting that the EV microphones are considered expensive. Nevertheless, their world-class performance justifies the cost. Additionally, there is a smaller counterpart, the EV R320, which we haven’t tested personally, but it has received positive reviews from users who appreciate its performance. Overall, the Electro-Voice RE20 is revered for its remarkable sound quality, making it a top choice for audio enthusiasts willing to invest in premium equipment.
